| CHIEF
EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT July 2007. Patrick Fahy |
Truth
and Wisdom of the Natural Health Profession
- with effective non toxic therapies
In
New Zealand we have the technological advances
of modern medicine, yet these provide poor health
outcomes.
At our Annual General Meeting last month I discussed
a number of issues with regard to the natural
health sector. Some of these issues including
one of which is close to my heart, that is the
average age of our membership, and one other
the financial and corrupt practices of financial
institutions and government agencies.
For the past 5 years, and in many cases since
the late 1990s, the Charter which has traditionally
anchored the natural health care sector in New
Zealand has seen its members age and our membership
numbers decline which raises pressing questions
for all of us.
We know that our teaching establishments are
maintaining steady student rolls so "Why is
it then that younger healthcare professionals
are not joining their professional associations
like they once did? What will happen to the
associations made strong by members of previous
generations who will inevitably retire. Who
will do what they have always done? The answers
are not straightforward, however it is clear
that we need younger members to step up to the
challenge. "I hear too often that young folks
just don't care.
I do not believe this to be the case it is probably
the farthest thing from the truth. "Younger
people just don't want to do things the way
their parents and grandparents did." For the
Charter to remain a successful and worthwhile
organisation it is imperative that we explore
every avenue to recruit younger members by focusing
on creating opportunities for younger people
to make their impact and contribution. We have
to make a conscious decision and effort to encourage
more young people to become involved. There
are many young professionals who can't or simply
won't make the time for service. We live in
a very busy world, and there isn't a lot of
time left to devote to a voluntary non-profit
organisation.
The family and financial pressures facing younger
people today are different than those felt in
the past. For one, young people are more transient
than in the past, particularly as they build
their careers -- and there's little incentive
to pour their limited spare time into a voluntary
organisation "that does not pay you". The Charter
is not alone, I have spoken with other organisations
including local Jaycees, Lions Club, Rotary
and countless other groups who have also seen
their membership drop in the past 5 -10 years,
their members too are "aging out". Across almost
all industries and professions, the 9-to-5 job
is no longer normal routine, as employers demand
more time and creativity from their employees.
That strain is compounded by the fact that many
families are juggling two careers. Gone are
the days when the wife was at home caring for
the children while her corporate-ladder-climbing
husband served on various community service
committees and boards. For those of us working
with the Charter we do it all for a sense of
purpose and working for that gratification of
accomplishing something and above all for "making
a difference" However with these sentiments
we do acknowledge that there is need for change
and rather than reinvent ourselves we need to
first acknowledge that there needs to be change
and set about pursuing the best options available
to achieve these objectives.

Tasman Joint Agency Update. |
We
Do Not Know When the Guillotine Will Drop
(In New Zealand terms, "waiting for the axe
to fall")
Minister King has, during the last four years,
used every method possible to ensure that the
Australian take over of New Zealand's Health Care
becomes a reality, regardless of all opposition
from Consumers, Practitioners, Industry and Political
Parties
Five days after New Zealand Radio reported
that the government does not have the required
numbers to pass the legislation, a situation which
has been recognised by healthcare advocates for
the last month, the mainstream media has featured
Minister King's statement "that the Therapeutic
Products and Medicines Bill is on
temporary hold until such time as the
government has the numbers to pass the legislation".
The mainstream media waited on instructions from
the Minister before announcing that the Government
did not have the numbers to pass the Bill.
This respite may only be a temporary situation,
so all our supporters still need to be prepared
for an intensive, ongoing campaign.
The Therapeutics Products and Medicines Bill was
passed for its second reading and forwarded to
a select committee on a very close vote 61 for
and 60 against.
The select committee's response was that it is
unable to recommend that the Bill be passed. The
situation (Tuesday, 17th July 2007) is a reversal
of that scenario with possibly 60 votes for the
Bill and 61 votes against. This figure is calculated
with ACT voting in favour of the Bill. At present
ACT appears to be swinging in the breeze. With
ACT voting against the Bill the voting ratio could
possibly have been 58 for and 63 against the Bill
if we take into account the Green, National, and
Maori Parties and the two Independent members
(Taito Philip Field and Gordon Copeland) voting
against the Bill.
For dietary supplement consumers (2.5 million
New Zealanders) this is a real cliff hanger. We
could wake up one morning to find that 75% of
the safe and effective dietary supplements (that
we have access to for supplementing our health
status) are no longer available.
Political
Reality
The political reality behind Minister King's announcement
is that: The Bill is still on the Government Order
Paper and could be brought forward at any time
of the government's choosing, even the middle
of the night, under the guise of urgency.
It appears that Minister King's Move to "temporarily"
place the Bill on hold is unprecedented in the
151 year history of the New Zealand Parliament".
The Bill will not be debated until such time as
Minster King is able to twist enough arms, gain
support with future political favours as a bargaining
chip, or until such times as when consumers grow
tired of continually rallying support against
the dictatorial legislation promoted by the Ministry
of Health and medical mind set administrators.
The Guillotine is Poised
to Drop The Axe is Ready to Fall at Any Time
When is Anybody's Guess. What can the Consumer
do in the Meantime?
Be Continually Vigilant!!!
The healthcare industry and practitioners are
exploring the possibility of a one to one meeting
with the new Minister of Health, the Hon. Pete
Hodgson, for discussions on new, sane, sensible
and practical, user pays regulations, designed
by New Zealanders for New Zealanders.
This is the type of legislation that will ensure
New Zealanders have access to the full spectrum
of dietary supplements that are currently available.
CAVEAT
The following is a report from the NZ Herald Tuesday
17th July 2007 and underlines the necessity for
vigilance with regard to what would happen if
New Zealanders relaxed their hard fought values
covering healthcare products.
Cabinet minister Annette King has passed responsibility
for the issue to Health Minister Pete Hodgson,
who said yesterday that "the status quo of
an unregulated market
for medical devices and complementary medicines
cannot remain".
He would not expand on those comments last
night but it is understood officials will soon
be asked to look at his powers to create
regulations to apply to such products sold
in New Zealand. There has been wide acceptance
that New Zealand needs greater regulation but
sections of the complementary medicines industry
teamed up with the Greens and National to campaign
against what they saw as a costly bureaucracy
and unnecessarily harsh regulation.
We need to ensure that
any new regulations are not a duplication of the
unwarranted, objectionable and impractical Australian
regulations.
The Health Minister Pete
Hodgson has been lead
astray by the former Minister of Health,
who to promote the need for the Joint Agency Treaty
and the empowering legislation the Therapeutic
Products and Medicines Bill continually claimed
that the New Zealand Market for Medical Devices
and complementary medicines was unregulated.
The Australian New Zealand Food Safety Authority
regulates the manufacture of complementary medicines.
The marketing and distribution of complementary
medicines is regulated by Medsafe of the Ministry
of Health under the Medicines Act of 1981 and
its amendments.
Complementary medicines also come under the Fair
Trading Act.
For any Minister to state that complementary medicines
are unregulated is a clear indication that Ministerial
advisors have been leading the Minister up the
proverbial garden path with misinformation.
The New Zealand Health Industry and Health Practitioners
welcomes the opportunity to take part in open
and honest discussions for the creation
of sane sensible, practical legislation created
for New Zealand by New Zealand. Legislation that
will be in tune with New Zealand's obligation
to the World Trade organisation and the aspirations
of the New Zealand consumer for products to supplement
their health status.
Our primary aim is to ensure that quality, safe
and effective Health Care products continue to
be available for this and future generations under
a New Zealand developed regulatory regime that
takes into consideration the virtual zero-level
risk that underpins the natural health product
industry.
If you wish to ensure that Dietary Supplements
that are available today are available for this
and Future Generations, You
need to Take Action Now!!!
Do not wait until the Guillotine or the Axe is
Halfway Down!
EVEN
AN AMMENDED BILL IS NO-WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND!
The present government has a deplorable and autocratic
history of totally ignoring petitions, public
opinion, the in depth findings of royal commissions,
and extensively researched, costly (millions of
dollars) taxpayer funded parliamentary select
committee recommendations.

Laugh,
a minute
A
doctor and a lawyer met at a party. Their conversation
was interrupted repeatedly by guests asking the
doctor for medical advice. Finally, the exasperated
doctor turned to the lawyer and said, "Tell me,
what do you do to stop people from asking you
for legal advice when you're out of the office?"
"When they ask, I give them advice", replied the
lawyer, "and then I send them a bill in the morning."
The doctor decided to take the lawyer's advice
and for the rest of the evening wrote down the
names and addresses of everyone who approached
him for advice. The next morning he took out the
list, just as his secretary walked into his office
and handed him a bill from the lawyer.
"To the world you might
be one person, but to one person you might be
the world."
