As we head toward Christmas 2006 and the New Year fast approaches we reflect on a very busy year, with a number of positives a few disappointments and of course the introduction to parliament of the dreaded Therapeutic Products and Medicines Legislation. Despite all our efforts, the power and corruption and not to mention money wins the day with New Zealand First folding under the mere pressure. We understand that Australian Prime Minister John Howard threatened trade sanctions against New Zealand if our politicians didn’t fall into line.

This treaty with Australia will set in place laws which will make it even more difficult for us to take care of our own health in a manner we think best. Annette King has continually stated that “consumer protection" is the justification for restrictive legislation by removing "dangerous" substances such as herbs that have been used for millennia and vitamins or other nutrients that help to keep us away from the clutches of toxic medical drugs.
However, for those of us who can think for themselves and have moved on from the tooth fairy’s hypocrisy, are well aware that the treaty with Australia is in line with Codex Alimentarius and the European Directive on food supplements who support the same basic reductionist model of western science that argues that pharmaceuticals are the only answer to all health problems.

As we have continually stated nutritional guidelines for herbal, vitamin mineral and amino acid guidelines should be evaluated by nutritional science rather than the toxicological science used to evaluate toxins. Codex Alimentarius categorically states that nutrients should be treated as toxins and that foods and nutrients are not useful in treating disease and therefore supplements are of little value.

This is why the handing over of our total healthcare system to a heavy handed Australian Bureaucracy with no respect for the health of the consumer will no doubt serve its intended purpose of harmonising laws across the South Pacific as planned and in line with the European Union to protect the intended vested interests, not the health and welfare of the consumer. Many people in different countries are fed up with over-zealous laws, and it will only be a matter of time before people who have been nullified by deceitful politicians and force fed media propaganda, take back their rightful control of their own destiny.
It should not be forgotten that there is an international move to narrow down our health care options, and the golden rule by those elected to protect the health and welfare of the people when it comes to the introduction of flagrantly undemocratic and unpopular so called reforms is that the true intentions of politicians and vested interests must be concealed and the public must be kept ignorant and confused such as happened in this undemocratic union with Australia, until it is too late.

The campaign for protecting our healthcare freedom is only beginning and the New Year will demonstrate that we are not alone in this cause.

As most of you will already know New Zealand First, agreed to support the Bill through to the first reading in the house. New Zealand First have supported the Bill which will effectively set in place the Joint Therapeutics Products and Medicines Agency with Australia even though they previously promised to oppose it. This is a major sellout of New Zealand’s healthcare system given the stern position of opposition they took before signing up to the deal with Labour.
The regulatory and compliance costs of this joint agency will make it very hard for all New Zealand based dietary supplement companies.

This treaty with Australia will hand over sovereignty for the regulation of therapeutics to an organisation established under Australian law with very limited input from New Zealand.

This treaty agreement effectively brings the New Zealand regulation of drugs under the Australia United States Free Trade Agreement because the Joint Therapeutics Agency is established under Australian federal law.

One of the targets of the Australia United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA was Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme which is a weak version of our government owned drug agency Pharmac.

My name is Kirsty Bell Hunter. I have been a practicing Medical Herbalist since 1994. As well, I am in my 2nd year of the Post Grad Diploma in Clinical Psych at the University of Waikato. As a pre-requisite to the 3rd year, I must have completed my Masters Thesis by the end of 2007. My thesis is titled ‘Beyond Hypericum: perceptions of treatments by Herbalists for Depression’. I am presently conducting research and have begun interviewing. I am however, looking for more participants.

Criteria: Must have been to a Medical Herbalist for symptoms of low moods/depression. Must have received some form of recommended treatment or have engaged in some sort of treatment program. Doesn’t matter the reasons for the moods. Don’t need to have been medically diagnosed.

Wow factor !!!! There will be a draw for the participants at the end of the interview process with the prize of a free consultation with a herbalist of their choice to the value of $100:00.
