Chief Executive Officers Report - Ezine March 2006

A special report covering indemnity insurance of practitioners.

Acting as Professionals!

There are a number of legal and ethical principles involved in conducting a professional practice. The simple facts are that as professionals, we are required to display reasonable care and skill, and as health professionals we also have a duty of care. As practitioners, we have a legal duty of care towards those who come to us for assistance.
Failing to act responsibly we can be held liable at law for any alleged breach and can be sued for compensation. This does not just mean liability if we were to injure someone or damage their property!

There are professional conduct issues that have nothing to do with treating or advising in the typical clinical situation. They revolve around the quality of communication, relationship and behavior.

Consumers are becoming more aware of their legal rights and how to exercise them in the courts should the need arise and like Americans and Australians New Zealander’s are becoming more litigation (blame) conscious.

MMR “One of the Greatest Scandals in Medical History”.

That’s an assessment of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine program for children in the United Kingdom - a program very much like our own in the United States. And that quote doesn’t come from a radical on the fringe of mainstream medicine. It comes from someone who was once at the very centre: Peter Fletcher, M.D. former Chief Scientific Officer for Britain’s Department of Health.

The evidence that links childhood vaccines (specifically, the mercury-based vaccine preservative thimerosal) to the alarming rise of autism over the past 15 years is becoming clearer by the day.

But now Dr. Fletcher has come forward with a new take on this controversy: It appears that autism is just part of a larger, more serious problem. And he believes the true culprit is the MMR vaccine.

Joke of the month!

A magician worked on a cruise ship. The audience was different each week so the magician did the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show. Look, it’s not the same hat!” or “Look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table!” or Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot. Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship unfortunately sank, drowning almost all who were on board. The magician luckily found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea with, and as fate would have it, the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred but did not utter a word. This went on for a day... and then 2 days... and then 3 days. Finally on the 4th day, the parrot could hold back no longer and said......
OK, I give up. Where’s the bloody ship?”
